Shutter

This photograph is an ink jet print by Amelia Fletcher titled The Orchard. The image has a simple composition with the subject placed in the center. The color is very pleasing in this image, and the mountain tops create a very beautiful horizon with the sky. By having darker areas around the sides and bottom of the frame, with it being lighter at the top and in the center, the image seems to open up into a vast landscape. The placement and positioning of the figure seems to mimic the shape of the trees, as she is standing tall on her tip toes and reaching up. The figure in all white also creates a nice contrast with her surroundings.
I find this piece very interesting. It reminds me of dreams that I sometimes have where I see a person, but try as i might I can never see their face. Which in turn makes me a little uncomfortable. Playing on that feeling, I feel the viewer is looking at the young woman in the photograph and she has no idea. In that case the viewer plays the role of a voyeur, looking at the young woman during a private, almost relaxing moment of her day.
Amelia did a good job at creating an image that makes the viewer want to take a closer look. I want to know what she is doing to the tree; is she picking things off the tree or is she tying things to the limbs, I am unsure but that makes it all the more intriguing. Her composition stands strong and craft is very clean, overall I think she has succeeded in creating a nice image.
